Looking for an absolutely charming spot to spend your vacation, perhaps something a bit unexpected? Tucked away behind lush privacy hedges is Hidden Cottage, a gem that will transport you away from your cares and into a relaxing Florida vacation.
Hidden Cottage is nestled on Camino Real (pronounced cah-MEE-no ray-AL), a lovely street just to the mainland side of the north bridge onto Siesta Key. When newcomers to Sarasota started to build homes in the 1920’s, Spanish Colonial architecture was all the rage, and streets often took their names to reflect that influence. Literally translated “Royal Road,” Camino Real today is home to many original cottages and gorgeous newer homes. Its true gem is The Field Club, located at the south end of the street. Built by Marshall Field III on the banks of Sarasota Bay, it’s a breathtaking example of the Spanish Colonial style.
As you enjoy the drive down this historic street, don’t miss the arched entry carved out of tropical foliage. Turn onto the curving brick-paved driveway and discover a hidden oasis! You’ll find yourself surrounded by a gorgeous assortment of tropical foliage, all native to the Florida landscape. Fruit-bearing trees offer papayas, avocados, oranges, lemons, and mangoes. Bougainvillea and jasmine bloom during much of the year, and a spectacular Royal Poinciana tree crowns the property with gorgeous red blooms in May and June.
The main cottage includes its original wood floors, plus a remodeled kitchen filled with a gourmet’s pick of European appliances, including a gas range, double-drawer dishwasher, and French door refrigerator. Although there’s a dining area for eating inside, your favorite place to eat will undoubtedly be the screened patio, with dining for six and a large gas grill.
The main cottage also features two bedrooms, each with an en suite bath. The master bedroom and bathroom offer a king bed, flat-panel TV, spa tub, walk-in shower, and direct access to the screened patio, while the second bedroom features a queen bed and a large collection of books for your reading enjoyment.
A separate guest cottage with a queen bed, full bath, flat-panel TV, and small kitchenette is located across the way. Separated from the main house by the beautiful free-form pool and spa, it’s the perfect spot for members of your group who might want a bit more privacy. This charming getaway can be accentuated by some of the areas most romantic dining.
The pool, designed to give the feel of a hidden natural lagoon, is surrounded by white bird of paradise, bougainvillea, and colorful crotons. It’s the perfect spot for sunning and relaxing.
When you’re ready to explore the area, it’s an easy 4-mile drive or bike ride to Siesta Key village and the beaches. The attractions of Sarasota also await: known as a cultural center, you’ll find a world-famous botanical garden, theater productions, opera, and the renowned Ringling Museum complex just a short distance away.
