Known for some of the best golf courses and fishing in the state, Arcadia Lake is a small lake near Lake Michigan. The world-class Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course, just two miles away from Arcadia, is a 245-acre daily-fee club open to the public 7 days a week from mid-April through mid-November. The facility is designed to foster enjoyment in guests of all golfing abilities, with a premier 18-hole layout, full practice range, and separate short-game facility. Nearby you’ll also find the family-owned Chestnut Hills Golf Course, “where golf is still just a game,” with 18 holes, a warm-up green, and a driving/practice range. The Bear Lake Highlands course, established in 1964 with its rolling terrain, water on 7 holes, and a great view of Bear Lake, is only 12 minutes away from your home at Pointe Arcadia. Heathlands Golf Course is 10 minutes away, Crystal Lake Golf Club is 15 minutes away, and Crystal Mountain is 26 minutes away with two courses and a water slide. For an eventful and diverse golfing experience, you could practically try a new golf course every day!

As for fishing, deep water close to shallow water in nearby Lake Michigan brings seasonal runs of Brown Trout, a few Chinook Salmon, and Coho Salmon. October and November are prime times for Brown Trout and Steelhead. The former state record brown trout (34 pounds, 6 ounces) was caught there in 1984! Manistee County has multiple fishing tournaments each month from May through September. Access to Lake Michigan near Arcadia can be difficult but a 1997 grant from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust allowed for the creation of a 10-foot by 40-foot platform on Arcadia Lake near Grebe Park. There is parking for 15 vehicles.

For more exploring, take a drive on the beautiful M-22 loop, recently voted “America’s Number One Best Scenic Autumn Drive” by 10Best and USA Today. This stretch of road is pretty in every season and will take you to wineries, art galleries, and numerous small towns along Lake Michigan’s coast full of friendly Michiganders! Towns along the loop include Arcadia, Manistee, Onekama, and Frankfort, among many others full of possibilities. Arcadia is home to Arcadia Daze every July as well as Inspiration Point, the highest point (and the best view) on the shore of Lake Michigan. Manistee, the county seat, is known for the historic Ramsdell Theater, 1.5 mile Riverwalk, and the Little River Casino. Each year, it holds a Forest Festival on July 4th and Old Christmas Weekend in early December. Onekama is known as the “Two Lake Town” as it offers shoreline along Lake Michigan as well as the peaceful Portage Lake. It also has restaurants, antique shops, a farmer’s market, and a Fall Festival each October. Just north of Frankfort is the famously picturesque Point Betsie Lighthouse, but you will want to stop first in this quiet town and enjoy the large Victorian houses along tree-lined streets amid galleries, specialty shops, and waterfront restaurants.

Farther along M-22 is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, listed on CNN Travel’s list of “20 Can’t-Miss Beaches” and named “The Most Beautiful Place in America” by ABC’s Good Morning America viewers! With 35 miles along Lake Michigan, two islands, 21 inland lakes, 400-foot sand dunes, hiking and biking trails, and the Maritime Museum, this park brings in over a million visitors each year. If you take M-22 all the way up and around Leelanau County through more beautiful locations and charming small towns, you’ll end up in Traverse City, the Cherry Capital of Northern Michigan and one of America’s Top 10 Beach Towns (by Fodor’s Travel Guides). This area is home to 34 wineries; golf championship courses with designs by pros; premier spas; baseball; the National Cherry Festival lasting 8 days every July including concerts, a crafts fair, a vehicle show, parades, and fireworks; the Traverse City Film Festival in July-August, one of the largest film festivals in the Midwest; and the Taste of Traverse City event each September.
