Old Florida Charm

There are many cities through the great state of Florida that have become very industrialized over the years, which often makes them less and less of a place to vacation and relax. With the high-rise buildings, noise of the traffic flow, and the hustle and bustle of working individuals, we can understand why these areas aren’t a hub for people looking for a place to unwind for a week or two! However, we can say, without a doubt, that Anna Maria Island has not lost its Old Florida feeling, and it’s still an amazing vacation spot that we suggest you spend some time in!

With an astounding seven-mile stretch of shore just off the coastline, Anna Maria Island might just be the best place to relax and unwind. Anna Maria Island is proud of its history and strives to ensure they keep the slow-paced lifestyle that Florida originated with.

We know that “Old Florida” makes it sound like a retirement villa, but that not what we mean at all! The term actually refers to anything from the mid-20th century or before, which is what you will find on this quaint little island. The various buildings and structures located in the Historic Green Village as all self-preserved in their own little community of restaurants, shops, and houses, and features buildings that date back as far as 100 years!

One of the big attractions that boast that “Old Florida” charm is the City Pier, originally built in 1911. While it has been rebuilt and restored a few different times due to storm damage over the decades, it still has that charm that Anna Maria Island is known for.

The Weather

Depending on the time of year you visit, you will encounter different types of weather and temperatures, but we believe that each season on Anna Maria Island has something different to offer, and each is equally enjoyable! We suggest reading about the various types of weather that you may come across before choosing your vacation date, but rest assured that Anna Maria Island is the place to be regardless of the time of year!

If you are hoping to relax and enjoy your time on the island without worrying about the summer heat, we suggest visiting in either the Spring or the Fall. With temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to mid-90s, we believe this is the perfect vacation weather! The water might be a little chilly for a swim, but certainly not too cool to enjoy a relaxing day on the beach in the sun.

On the other hand, if that tropical heat is what you are aiming for, then the summer months are when you will want to visit! Typically, July and August are our warmest months, offering you some incredible swimming weather and conditions. The temperatures are usually around the mid-90s but can get higher. We will admit that summer tends to be a little rainier than other times during the year, and this is due to the tropical weather. With higher temperatures comes high humidity, and as such, rain can be expected more frequently. However, those rains don’t tend to last long, and the sun is usually back out before long.

The Beaches

What keeps people coming back to Anna Maria Island as their favorite vacation spot are the fantastic beaches. With so many beaches to choose from, you will want to hit as many as you can while you are here. We have highlighted a few of our favorites below!

Located on Holmes Beach, Manatee Public Beach is a 900-foot expanse of powder white sand located directly in the middle of Anna Maria Island. With its picnic tables, grills, public restrooms, playground, lifeguard shacks, and a newly renovated Café right on the beach, this is the perfect beach for a family outing! If you are hoping to enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine to watch a gorgeous sunset, then this beach is also the place that you want to be!

For a different kind of beach feel, you should visit Coquina Beach, with its incredible 96 acres of pine-shaded perfection located at the south end of Anna Maria Island. The beach is named Coquina for the colorful clam-like creatures found in the sand at the shoreline and is a perfect oasis for a romantic sunset beach walk! There are plenty of areas along this beach to enjoy snorkeling and diving so that you can see the wonderful world that exists under the surf!

Nestled between Manatee and Coquina Beach is Bradenton Beach, a quieter, more secluded private beach where you will find people enjoying the beach in front of their various accommodations. There are a few restaurants along this area as well, offering you some delicious respite during your afternoon adventures of beach hopping!
