Take a Bike Ride Around Anna Maria Island!

We all know that Anna Maria Island is a small place. In length, it’s just barely over seven miles. But that’s why we love it!

There’s so much charm in small towns, and that’s what draws visitors back to the island year after year. In fact, AMI is so charming that we have three towns on our little island: Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, and Bradenton Beach.

But with about 8,000 residents, plus new tourists and long-time visitors (at this point, you’re practically family!), traffic on the island can get a little busy. We are only seven miles long, after all!

No one wants to sit in traffic while on vacation, and while many places on the island are walkable no matter where you stay, sometimes you just need a vehicle. But what if that vehicle had two wheels instead of four?

Bike sharing in Anna Maria’s future?

In big cities all over the world, like London and New York, and even smaller cities Washington, DC, or Nashville, Bike Sharing is becoming the travel method du jour.

It’s a simple concept, if you aren’t familiar: at several locations across the city, bike stands are conveniently positioned in heavy traffic areas. You rent a bike for an hour or two, ride it wherever you need to go, and return it to the nearest convenient bike stand. It’s like RedBox, except for bicycles.

Sounds great, right? Bikes are an easy way to get around town, whether it’s a busy metropolitan or a charming island. Not only is it a convenient mode of travel, but a bike ride is a great family activity too! And with a bike, you never have to worry about finding a parking spot! Really, it sounds as easy as – well – riding a bike!

Two AMI locals certainly think so, and they’ve proposed installing a bike sharing program and docks on the island. They’ve suggested several locations for bike docks around the island, and the bikes would be rentable through a mobile app.

The plan is still under consideration by local officials; a recent news report said that Holmes Beach commissioners would review the business plan in the coming weeks.

If you can’t wait for the bicycle wheels of bureaucracy to turn, never fear – there are plenty of bike rentals available already on Anna Maria Island!
